Alexander Technique

Do less. Feel better.

What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a Mind/Body educational technique that uses a step by step process to release extra tension in the body, so that we can move with more ease and less pain.

Why do people study the Alexander Technique?

  • Posture

When we think of posture many of us think of “standing up straight” which in many of us can produce stiffness and discomfort. The AT approaches posture differently. Instead of standing up straight, we let go of the muscle contractions that are pulling us down in the first place so that we can be more easeful and balanced as we stand.

  • Pain

I personally find the AT to be an effective tool for reducing pain from wear and tear and injury and also for managing my chronic pain condition. It has been shown to be particularly effective in helping neck pain and back pain. If you have pain that is caused or intensified by the way you are sitting, standing and moving in your daily life the Alexander Technique can help you by teaching you to change those habits of movement.

  • Performance

Whether you are a performer in any discipline, or simply someone who wants to improve your performance in any skill you are working, the AT will teach you how to work less hard and get better results in the activities that you are pursuing. Broaden your range of expression, learn excellent tools for self care, and reduce wear and tear on the body to increase longevity.

  • Presence

The first principle of the Alexander Technique is awareness. In cultivating an awareness of myself in the present moment I have found that I am much more able to simply be present in the activities of my life and to communicate presence whether I am listening or speaking. Having a more deeply aware and embodied experience of the world has for me been a huge gift.

  • Personal Growth

I often tell people that the most surprising and beneficial side effect of the Alexander Technique is that it made me saner. In learning that I have the ability to choose the way that I wish to engage in the world around me instead of just reacting habitually to whatever is in front of me, I have become a lot calmer, a lot happier and dramatically better able to handle stress.
